What is trauma oil?

3 DIY Trauma Oil Recipes for Natural Relief

Did you accidentally bump into the coffee table and bruise your leg… again?

Do you have achy joints and soreness in your fingers and wrists?

Sounds like you could use a DIY Trauma Oil recipe!

What is Trauma Oil, anyway?

While there’s no “universal” Trauma Oil recipe, it’s always made with a carrier oil that’s been infused with therapeutic herbs.

A popular way to make Trauma Oil is by starting with extra-virgin, organic olive oil, and infusing it with arnica, St. John’s wort, and calendula. (But different suppliers may have their own variations on this recipe.)

If you wish to make your own DIY Trauma Oil, I suggest infusing each of these herbs individually.

Make sure your herbs are organic and as fresh as possible (especially the St. John’s wort).

Put each in a separate glass jar, and fill the jar with your organic carrier oil of choice. Allow each infusion to sit for around a month (or 6 weeks, if you prefer). When your oils are infused, filter the herbs out and combine the oils into a single jar.

Ta da! Your very own DIY Trauma Oil!

What is Trauma Oil used for?

Its name says it all!

Trauma Oil feels deeply soothing when massaged into painful, inflamed areas (where the skin is not broken). It has a beautiful ability to calm inflammation. Try it for bruises, achy joints and muscles, and for neck tension. It’s also great for DIY headache recipes!

Trauma Oil offers relief all by itself, even without essential oils blended into it. And adding essential oils takes the natural pain relief to a whole new level!

Here are 3 DIY pain relief recipes you can make with Trauma Oil and essential oils.

Each is made in a 1 oz (30 ml) glass bottle.

Bruise Oil

  • 1 oz (30 ml) Trauma Oil
  • 12 drops Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • 6 drops Helichrysum essential oil (Helichrysum italicum)

Gently apply this oil to the bumped or bruised area as soon as possible. Reapply as needed until the bruise fades.

You may want to use it more often during the first few days, when the bruise is sore. You can also apply a bit of this recipe over a sting or bug bite.

Bruise Oil

Sore Joint Oil

  • 1 oz (30 ml) Trauma Oil
  • 11 drops German Chamomile essential oil (Matricaria recutita)
  • 7 drops Juniper Berry essential oil (Juniperus communis)

Massage sore joints with this blend as needed. Fingers and wrists love this recipe!

Neck and Shoulder Oil

  • 1 oz (30 ml) Trauma Oil
  • 9 drops Geranium essential oil (Pelargonium × asperum)
  • 6 drops Peppermint essential oil (Mentha × piperita)

Massage a sore, stiff neck and shoulders with this recipe as needed.

Trauma Oil is great to keep in your natural care kit.

It can be a “life saver” if you bruise easily, or if you care for children who tend to fall down or bump into things while they’re playing. It’s gentle and effective enough that you can use it for kids without adding essential oils. (Even kids under 5!)

Trauma Oil is also a great ingredient in other DIY aromatherapy recipes. Try blending it with butters or beeswax to make a salve!
