Orange and Roman Chamomile essential oils work together as fantastic antispasmodics supporting our digestive system.

Some favorite parts of the holidays include special dishes I only make at this time of year, and I want to taste everything! How about we make a belly butter together? We can include some essential oils for digestion.

Here's the recipe that includes Ginger and Spikenard, which are two more essential oils for digestion that offer a lot of relief. This recipe makes 3.5 oz (98 g) of body butter. You'll need two 2 oz (60 ml) glass jars.

Orange's "Spiked"Belly Butter (with Essential Oils for Digestion)

  • ½ oz (14 g) Beeswax (Cera alba)

  • 1 fl oz (30 ml) Jojoba Wax (Simmondsia chinensis)

  • 1 oz (28 g) Cocoa Butter (Theobroma cacao)

  • 1 oz (28 g) Coconut Oil (Cocos nucifera)

  • 7 drops Ginger Essential Oil (Zingiber officinale)

  • 10 drops Roman Chamomile Essential Oil (Chamaemelum nobile)

  • 7 drops Spikenard Essential Oil (Nardostachys jatamansi)

  • 17 drops Orange Essential Oil (Citrus sinensis)

Directions

  1. Set up the "Stovetop Melting Method."Put a Pyrex measuring cup in a soup pot that's ¼ full of gently boiling water.

  2. Put the beeswax in your Pyrex first. It will take the longest to melt since it's the hardest ingredient.

  3. Add the jojoba and melt.

  4. Add the cocoa butter and melt. You can stir gently with a glass stirring rod or the handle of a stainless steel spoon.

  5. Add the coconut oil and melt.

As soon as all the ingredients are melted together, remove the blend from heat and add the essential oils.

If you would like to substitute something for Spikenard essential oil, you can use 7 drops of Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) or Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides) essential oil instead.

Pour the blend into the glass jars and let it solidify. Massage the belly butter into your belly and low back to help yourself digest rich food. You can use this blend before a big meal, or you can use it after you've already eaten and feel "too full to move."

This recipe is in my book, The Heart of Aromatherapy: An Easy-to-Use Guide for Essential Oils. I have an entire chapter dedicated to digestion in this book. If you have an Aromatherapy lover in your life, I'd be honored if you'd give them a copy of my book!
