How to Use Hydrosols and Essential oils to Clean Your Floors Naturally (these work for carpets too!)

I share a lot of natural cleaning blends here on The Aromahead Blog. These come in especially useful around the holidays, when you might have friends and family coming over.

There are surface cleaning blends. . . tub and tile scrubs. . . "sticky residue"remover. . . and more!

I want to share how to clean your floors naturally with Aromatherapy. You can clean hardwood, tile, linoleum, vinyl, carpets and more with the techniques in this post.

I like to use hydrosols for cleaning floors. Hydrosols are very effective, and they don't have the same safety considerations as essential oils, so there are no concerns if kids or pets are crawling around.

Here's a short list of hydrosols that you can use to clean your floors naturally. They're helpful for reducing the presence of germs and they make the room smell amazing!

  • Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

  • Peppermint (Mentha x piperita)

  • Orange (Citrus sinensis)

  • Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)

  • Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

  • Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)

You can use any of these hydrosols by itself, or you can choose a few favorites and make a blend to personalize the aroma of your floor cleaner.

Hard Surface Floors

First, use a broom to sweep up dust and dirt that may be on your floor. Then get out your mop!

To mop your hard surface floors, you can use pure hot water. I like to use a mop with a removable terry cloth cover. These mops are convenient and keep things extra clean, because the terry cloth cover itself is machine washable.

Pour a few capfuls of hydrosol right into the hot water. (You can use the cap that comes with the hydrosol bottle. Two or three capfuls should be perfect.) You can use a single hydrosol, or blend a few (Tea Tree and Lavender make a great combination!)

Carpets

If you have carpets, I have two suggestions for how you can freshen and clean your floors naturally. (I love how versatile and effective Aromatherapy is!)

First, use your vacuum. Then you can use a hydrosol to spritz your carpets, reducing germs and freshening the carpet's scent.

Another suggestion is to make a carpet cleaning powder with 1 oz (28 g) baking soda and 1 drop of essential oil. (I like Lavender, Frankincense, or Tea Tree for this. Just 1 drop is enough.) Mix the baking soda and essential oil in a small cup. Be sure to test a small area of carpet to be sure the baking soda and essential oil don't damage it—just sprinkle the blend over the test area and let it sit for 10 minutes, then vacuum.

If your carpet looks (and smells!) great, you can use the baking soda mixture on the rest of your carpet. Be sure that no pets or children will be around to walk on the carpet for the 10 minutes when the powder is in place.

And there you have it! You didn't have to use harsh chemicals to clean your floors naturally, and your rooms smell beautiful. Have fun cleaning!
