Make a Supportive Body Oil for Colds to Feel Vital and Healthy

My friend Grapefruit essential oil (Citrus paradisi) is great company during cold and flu season.

So I thought I would interview Grapefruit to see how it helps people stay healthy (and maybe we’ll even learn a recipe)!

Me: Grapefruit, thanks for being here! Can you share your secret for preventing colds with essential oils?

Grapefruit essential oil: Absolutely. I’m a great essential oil for colds, since I’m full of a natural component called “d-limonene.”

Me: D-limonene . . . I’ve heard of that! Isn’t there research that shows d-limonene is wonderful for preventing infections?

Grapefruit essential oil: Yup! I also like to work with friends, who can prevent colds and flu in their own ways. Like Tea Tree essential oil—my friend Tea Tree doesn’t contain d-limonene. Instead, it’s rich with a natural infection-reducing component called “terpinen-4-ol.”

Me: Wow!

Grapefruit essential oil: And my friend Eucalyptus is rich in “1,8-cineole!”

Me: I love using Eucalyptus during cold and flu season.

Grapefruit and I talked for awhile, so I’ll jump to the essential oil recipe it gave me for its favorite body oil for colds!

This recipe is rich with d-limonene, terpinen-4-ol, and 1,8-cineole, so we’re approaching that cold from multiple angles.

Grapefruit’s Essential Body Oil for Colds

  • 1 oz (30 ml) jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis)
  • 9 drops Grapefruit essential oil (Citrus paradisi)
  • 5 drops Tea Tree essential oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)
  • 4 drops Eucalyptus essential oil (Eucalyptus globulus)

Make this blend in a 1 oz (30 ml) glass bottle. Combine your jojoba and essential oils, and shake gently.

For kids, I'd recommend using Lavender in place of Eucalyptus, and making the blend at a 1% dilution.

Grapefruit’s Essential Body Oil for Colds - Kids' Version!

  • 1 oz (30 ml) jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis)
  • 2 drops Grapefruit essential oil (Citrus paradisi)
  • 2 drops Tea Tree essential oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)
  • 2 drops Lavender essential oil (Lavendula angusifolia)

Use your body oil for colds when you want to keep your immunity strong and reduce infections. I love the idea of smoothing on an all-natural skin-nourishing “immunity shield!”

If you’re wondering about Grapefruit essential oil’s phototoxic effects . . . I’m glad!

I’m glad you’re thinking about essential oil safety.

It’s true that many citrus essential oils can cause phototoxic effects. When we apply them to our skin and then go out in the sun, they can cause negative skin reactions. (You can learn more about that here.) 

No fun.

But Grapefruit essential oil is only phototoxic when it’s used at more than 24 drops per 1 oz (30 ml) of carrier.

That means we’d have to use 25 drops of Grapefruit in this blend to reach the “danger zone.”

And we’re safe with just 9 drops!

So enjoy your body oil for colds and flu, knowing you’re protected.
