Lavender Talks about Whether to Use Essential Oils for Babies and Gives Us a Recipe
Lavender is one of the most gentle essential oils I know. Lavender LOVES taking care of people, especially children, so I thought it would be the perfect “friend” to ask about whether to use essential oils for babies . . .
Me: So what do you think Lavender? Can we use essential oils for babies?
Lavender: I’m glad you asked, Andrea. Let’s talk about this! As you know, we essential oils are very strong. We’re highly concentrated plant substances.
Me: Right! That’s what makes you so good at supporting our health naturally.
Lavender: That’s exactly right, Andrea. But it also means that we may not be the right choices for babies. Their little bodies are just so small and sensitive. It’s easy for them to get overwhelmed by us . . . even me, and you know how gentle I am!
Me: Wow, Lavender, you’re right . . . so if we’re not going to use essential oils for babies, how can we support their health? We definitely want to do it naturally.
Lavender: I agree, babies deserve our best, gentlest, purest, most natural love and care! Fortunately, you can use hydrosols for babies without concerns about safety.
Me: Really? So if a baby has a skin issue, is anxious, can’t sleep, or has a little cold, we can use hydrosols?
Lavender: You sure can! You can spritz hydrosols right on the baby’s skin, or spray them on blankets and around the crib.
Me: Whew! That’s a relief! Thank you for the tip Lavender.
Lavender: My pleasure!
Well, there you have it . . . Lavender’s own perspective on whether to use essential oils for babies!
I’d like to add that in the Aromatherapy community, you’ll find different opinions about this. That’s okay! At Aromahead Institute, we take a conservative approach, respecting the fact that babies are so small and delicate, and that essential oils are extremely powerful.
We’ve found that hydrosols, as well as natural carrier oils and butters (like aloe and shea butter) can help a baby’s sensitive, responsive system to rebalance itself towards health. The lighter touch we can use, the better!
I want to share a hydrosol blend for babies from Aromahead’s online class, Aromatherapy for Natural Living. We have a whole lesson in this class dedicated to using essential oils for children, and it’s full of recipes and safety information.
This recipe combines three hydrosols and a bit of aloe vera gel for a hydrosol spray that you can use for baby acne, diaper rash, red and inflamed skin irritations, small cuts, and scrapes.
Baby Your Baby Hydrosol Spray
- ½ oz (15 ml) German Chamomile hydrosol (Matricaria recutita)
- ½ oz (15 ml) Calendula hydrosol (Calendula officinalis)
- ½ oz (15 ml) Lavender hydrosol (Lavandula angustifolia)
- ¼ oz (7 g) aloe vera gel (Aloe barbadensis)
Make this blend in a 2 oz (60 ml) glass or PET plastic spray bottle. Combine the ingredients, shake, and spray!
If you’re looking for an aloe vera gel that’s liquid enough to use in a spray bottle, try Aromatics International. They have a great one!
You’ll want to shake this blend before each use. I also recommend making a fresh bottle every few weeks, since there are no preservatives in it.
This blend is Lavender tested, baby approved! Try some on your own skin to see how it feels. I hope you love it, too.
