What Essential Oils are Good for Headaches?

by Andrea Butje on February 21, 2019

What essential oils are good for headaches? Here’s a quick list of 5 ways that some essential oils are good for headaches:

  1. Relieve pain
  2. Release tension
  3. Encourage relaxation (in mind, heart, and body)
  4. Support deep breathing
  5. Calm and center the mind

You can probably imagine that the first two ways help a lot—soothing inflammation (which causes pain) and helping the muscles in and around your head release tension can create some quick and amazing results!

The other three ways are important, too.

When we can relax, breathe deeply, and maintain a calm mind, we’re less likely to carry stress and tension that can translate to a headache.

In today’s recipe, I’m going to use 3 essential oils. These essential oils are good for headaches because they help bring about all 5 of the benefits I listed above.

This is a roll-on blend that you can use either during a headache, or before a headache sets in—and that’s so helpful if you tend to get headaches around the same time every day.

One of my students who tried this blend told me that she got a headache every day around the time her daughter got home from school. The headache would really deplete her energy and prevent her from having fun with her daughter.

So she used this blend early in the afternoon, and by the time her daughter got home from school . . . no headache! She was able to play with her daughter and enjoy that quality time!

Here’s the recipe . . .

My Headache is Gone! Roll-On Oil

  • 10 ml Trauma Oil
  • 2 drops Peppermint essential oil (Mentha × piperita)
  • 2 drops Frankincense essential oil (Boswellia carterii)
  • 2 drops Spike Lavender essential oil (Lavandula latifolia)

You’ll need a 10 ml roller-top bottle to make this recipe.

Combine the Trauma Oil and essential oils in your 10 ml bottle, then snap the roller-top into place.

When you have a headache (or don’t want to get one!), roll this blend on the back of your neck.

It helps to relax your muscles, and the relief radiates up through your head and scalp.

And if you want to approach headache relief from multiple angles, you can use your headache oil in combination with a headache inhaler. This recipe that I created for YouTube is specially formulated for sinus headaches, but it can help with any kind of headache you’re dealing with.

Have you ever used Trauma Oil before?

It is a fantastic carrier for natural pain relief blends!

Trauma Oil is actually a carrier oil (such as olive oil) that’s been infused with three inflammation-calming herbs: arnica, St. John’s wort, and calendula. (The St. John’s wort gives it a gorgeous, deep reddish brown color!)

While the essential oils are good for headaches, Trauma Oil alone can create a deep experience of natural pain relief.

But let’s add in the essential oils! (We are not going “half way” on this recipe!)

Peppermint is a classic essential oil for headaches. Its cooling touch seems to “dissolve” head pain so quickly!

Frankincense is usually considered first for things like relaxation, stress relief, and emotional balance. But take it from me . . . this is an incredible essential oil for headache relief! It is gentle and effective at calming inflammation.

Spike Lavender is different than “true” Lavender. It has some camphor in it, as well as a natural component called 1,8 cineole (which we also find in Eucalyptus essential oil). Spike Lavender is so good at releasing tension that I often use it in muscle massage blends for cramps or tight muscles after a workout. This translates to easing headaches very effectively.

All three of these essential oils are good for headaches because they also support deep, clear breathing. This helps the body relax through and through, releasing any tension that could try to creep back up into your shoulders, neck, and scalp.
