The Best Essential Oil for Reducing Anxiety? 4 Oils Shown to WORK!

I get a lot of questions about which essential oil is BEST for reducing anxiety.

And I am so happy to share what I know about this!

Because anxiety can feel like a really disruptive force in your life—your emotions, the balance of your mind, your schedule, your work, and even your relationships can all feel the influence of it. It’s as though anxiety “takes you away from yourself,” and you might not feel like you can fully show up for the people who are important to you.

There are a lot of essential oils that can help. If you ask me, there really is no “best” essential oil for reducing anxiety.

That said, some essential oils are more effective than others.

So I want to share four of the best essential oils for reducing anxiety that I know . . . and a recipe for using them SAFELY.

After over 20 years of teaching, I have seen thousands of people experience results from using these essential oils. While Aromatherapy is not “one size fits all,” these oils have been researched and shown to be very effective.

4 of the best essential oils for reducing anxiety are:

  • Neroli (Citrus aurantium amara)
  • Orange (Citrus sinensis)
  • Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)
  • Pinon Pine (Pinus edulis)

Two of these essential oils are citruses—Orange and Bergamot (which is actually another kind of Orange). That’s why you’ll sometimes hear “Bergamot” referred to as “Bergamot Orange.”

Citruses (especially the oranges) are some of the best essential oils for reducing anxiety, because they are so good at calming the nervous system and inspiring positive feelings. They have such bright, happy aromas!

Neroli essential oil is “technically” a floral, and is distilled from flowers.

But guess what kinds of flowers it is distilled from (hint . . . look at the Latin name for Neroli above!)

That’s right—a citrus tree! Neroli comes from the flowers of the Bitter Orange tree.

So we have two oils distilled from citrus fruit peels, and one distilled from the more delicate citrus flowers.

And finally, the 4th best essential oil for reducing anxiety, is Pinon Pine.

Pinon Pine has the ability to help calm physical tension (it has antispasmodic properties), easing those feelings of tightness in your muscles, and even in your breath, that sometimes come along with anxiety. It also has a gorgeous citrus note in its foresty, fresh aroma. So it blends beautifully with our other citrus oils!

Ready to make the recipe?

Absolutely Centered Inhaler

  • 1 drops Neroli essential oil (Citrus aurantium amara)
  • 5 drops Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis)
  • 4 drops Bergamot essential oil (Citrus bergamia)
  • 4 drops Pinon Pine essential oil (Pinus edulis)

There are a few ways you can make an Aromatherapy inhaler.

I often just take the piece of cotton and put it right into the inhaler “sleeve,” then drop the essential oils onto that!

Other times, such as if I’m making the inhaler for someone else or I’m not sure I love the aroma of my blend yet, I’ll put the piece of cotton into a little bowl. Then I can drop the essential oils onto the cotton, and use a pair of tweezers to move the cotton around and absorb any excess oil.

Then I use the tweezers to put the cotton into the inhaler “sleeve.”

And snap the cap into place!

You can use your inhaler as needed to help yourself feel calm, balanced, and centered throughout the day. It will fit right into your pocket or a bag.

Making an inhaler is one of the best ways to use essential oils for anxiety, because it means you’re spending a few moments taking deep breaths—and that alone can help to release tension from your body, giving you a few moments to clear your heart and mind.

Does it make you happy to know you can use natural sources, like essential oils, for your health and wellbeing?

Does it feel more responsible to you to reduce your family’s exposure to chemicals?

You are not alone!
