Natural Sore Throat Remedy: Make a Throat Cream

Natural Sore Throat RemedyI have a great natural sore throat remedy you won’t hear about every day!

What do you do when you have a sore throat?

Many people like hot tea with lemon and honey. You can also gargle with salt water, and make gargles with essential oils (try 1 drop of Tea Tree—Melaleuca alternifolia—in a small cup of water).

I also make a natural sore throat remedy—a cream with essential oils to apply to the outside of your throat, and all around to the back of your neck. This can be so soothing to the tender tissues of your throat.

There are two versions—one for kids (with less essential oil), and one for adults. Each is made in 2 oz (60 ml) unscented body cream. I rarely use Sandalwood in recipes (due to environmental issues) but I find nothing can replace Sandalwood when it comes to helping a sore throat heal quickly.

Essential oil drops for kids:

  • 4 drops Sandalwood essential oil (Santalum paniculatum)
  • 2 drops Tea Tree essential oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)
  • 2 drops Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • 2 drops Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)
  • 2 drops Lemon essential oils (Citrus limon)

Essential oil drops for adults:

  • 8 drops Sandalwood essential oil (Santalum paniculatum)
  • 5 drops Tea Tree essential oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)
  • 5 drops Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • 3 drops Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)
  • 5 drops Lemon essential oils (Citrus limon)

Just blend the oils into your cream, and rub the cream into your throat and the back of your neck. This blend is so soothing! You can apply it before you go out in the cold, and then wrap a scarf around your neck.

I recommend making this blend fresh every few weeks.

If you don’t have unscented cream, or are feeling too under the weather to make it, you can add the essential oils to 2 oz (60 ml) jojoba wax (Simmondsia chinensis).

This natural sore throat remedy can also help if you’ve been coughing and the muscles in your neck are sore. The essential oils have anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties.

I think my favorite throat-friendly essential oil is Sandalwood. Sometimes, when I feel a sore throat starting, I’ll just put a drop of Sandalwood in a teaspoon of jojoba, and rub it on my throat a few times a day. It’s soothing, antiviral, and anti-infectious. I can often stop a sore throat before it gets worse this way!

I just love the way these essential oils work in synergy and enhance one another’s effects to make my sore throat feel better—naturally!
