Natural sunburn relief you can make at home (and keep in the fridge!)
Nobody ever wants to get sunburned. We try to have a moderate amount of sun exposure, keep covered up, or to use skin-friendly sunscreens with natural ingredients.
But sometimes we get carried away working in the garden, live in or vacation at a tropical place, take a longer walk than we intended, or we just forget! We don’t even realize we’re getting burned while it’s happening. And then that evening, we get a look at ourselves in the mirror, see that red skin, and think, “Oh no!”
You can make a natural sunburn relief spray and keep it on hand for just such occasions.
I keep it in my refrigerator, so it’s extra soothing when I spray it on! In a 1 oz (30 ml) glass spray bottle, combine:
- Just under 1 oz (30 ml) Lavender hydrosol (Lavandula angustifolia)
- 15 drops Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia)
- 1 tsp (5 ml) aloe vera gel (Aloe barbadensis)
- 2 gel tabs of vitamin E (Just pierce the tabs with a safety pin and squeeze out the gel.)
- 2.5 ml Solubol dispersant
I recommend making this product fresh every few weeks.
I know that some kids get sunburned more often than adults, since they can lose track of time having fun outside. So this natural sunburn relief spray is safe for kids over five, even if they have super-sensitive skin. For kids' blends I usually use less essential oil than for adults, but since this blend has just Lavender essential oil, and is being used short term, I kept the recipe the same.
Have you ever used Lavender essential oil for burns?
It is so soothing and healing! If I happen to burn myself in the kitchen, I can just reach for my Lavender oil and dab the area with a few drops. It is anti-inflammatory and provides great pain relief. It also supports skin cells to repair themselves, just speeding that natural process along.
To make natural sunburn relief spray, I combine Lavender essential oil with Lavender hydrosol, and then add some aloe vera and vitamin E for good measure. All of these ingredients are so healing, but combining them creates a nice healing synergy.
You can use your spray as often as you like. It is great for helping you get to sleep too, so be sure to spray it all over your sunburn before you go to bed!
