Make Your Own Beeswax Candles

by Andrea Butje on June 23, 2014

I'm not an expert candle maker, but I just love making my own beeswax candles!

Make your own beeswax candlesHandmade candles make perfect gifts, but I like making them for myself, too. I like knowing where the beeswax came from, and that I'm using wicks that won't release toxins into my air. I like knowing the aromas I choose are real essential oils with therapeutic properties, not artificial fragrances. And I like that I can make beeswax candles for different purposes—for sleep, for relaxation and for energy!

I recently made a beeswax candle with Vetiver essential oil, and that one has become a favorite—the aroma is rich and long lasting.

I bought pretty little 4 oz (120 ml) canning jars, some beeswax, and wicks, and that is really all it takes. The picture above shows tea light candles made with beeswax. You can make these using the same process as making larger candles.

If you want to watch the process of making a candle, I made a YouTube video  demonstrating the recipe. This "How To" video is the perfect guide if you're just learning to make your own beeswax candles. Have fun!

Here a few of my suggestions for which essential oils to use in your candles:

  • Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)
  • Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus radiata or Eucalyptus citrodora for keeping away bugs)
  • Geranium (Pelargonium roseum X asperum)
  • Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)
  • Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis ct. camphor)
  • Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides)
