A Hemlock Essential Oil Natural Cleaning Spray

Is Hemlock essential oil safe? And what can you use it for?

Hemlock essential oil is distilled from a tree. There's another 'Hemlock' that's been used as a poison in the past, but that's a totally different species of plant

Here's what I wrote about that in my book, The Heart of Aromatherapy.

“It's easy to confuse Tsuga canadensis with the poisonous plant that's also commonly called 'Hemlock,' but they belong to entirely different genus and species. The toxic 'Hemlocks' are herbaceous members of the parsley family, while Tsuga canadensis is a conifer tree with a whole array of health-supporting properties.”

Hemlock essential oil has many therapeutic properties and can get rid of germs and leave your home piney fresh. You'll feel healthier too because Hemlock essential oil is immune-supportive. 

Here's an all-purpose natural cleaning spray recipe that you can use in your kitchen, bathroom, or on the go. It comes right from the pages of The Heart of Aromatherapy. I think the title shows how much Hemlock loves cleaning.

Hemlock's "I Love to Clean Everything" On-the-Go, All-Purpose, Amazing Kitchen and Bathroom Spray

Clean your kitchen, bathroom, or on the go!

Ingredients

• 8 fl oz (240 ml) water

• 1 teaspoon (5 ml) Castile Soap

• 14 drops Hemlock Oil (Tsuga canadensis)

• 10 drops Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)

• 8 drops Peppermint Oil (Mentha x piperita)

Equipment

• One 8 oz (240 ml) glass spray bottle

Directions

• Pour the water and Castile soap into the bottle.

• Add the essential oils.

• Cap tightly and shake well.

• Shake well before use and spray any surface you'd like to clean and wipe it dry.

I've suggested making this in an 8 oz (240 ml) spray bottle, but you can put some in a smaller bottle and keep it in your bag to spray down things like restaurant tables or your desk at work.

If you'd like to use your favorite hydrosol in this recipe, you can use 2 oz (60 ml) hydrosol and 6 oz (180 ml) water instead of a full 8 oz (240 ml) water. This is a great option because hydrosol adds to the natural cleaning effects of the blend, and it smells amazing.

I recommend making this blend fresh every few weeks since there are no preservatives in it and it includes water or hydrosol.

If you don't have Hemlock essential oil, you can substitute any one of the conifers. Black spruce (Picea mariana) would be a great choice! You could also try balsam fir (Abies balsamea) or piñon pine (Pinus edulis). All of the conifers are actually great for natural cleaning.
