Skin-Safe Foam Soap Recipes (propellant-free!)

A lot of foam soaps use propellants.

I love making foam soaps!

They’re so luxurious, and you can get creative with your recipes.

However, a lot of foam soaps include ingredients like gas or propellants. They create the decadent foaming action I love so much. But I don’t want them anywhere near my skin! Yuck!

So imagine my big smile when I learned there are
foam pump bottles that work on nothing but AIR!

Yup—these bottles create luscious foam without the need for any propellants. They only pump air into the product. And the foam is just as luxurious!

The air-pump tops are a little bulky, but that just means I don’t fill my bottle all the way up with ingredients. That way there’s room for the air-pump top in the bottle.

Foam-pump bottle blends!

There are so many fun, useful products you can make with a foam-pump soap bottle!

I like to make hand soap, body wash, and shave foam. I’m sharing a few recipe suggestions below. Each of them is made in a 50 ml foam pump bottle, which is about a travel-sized product. You’ll notice they’re all made with the same ingredients: castile soap, aloe vera gel, and jojoba.

The castile soap’s presence is obvious—that’s what actually cleans your skin!

Aloe vera gel is a light, silky, water-based ingredient that soothes irritated skin, and even helps repair small issues of skin damage.

Jojoba is often called an oil, but it’s actually a natural, plant-based, liquid wax. The fatty acids in jojoba closely resemble the oil produced by our own skin (which is called sebum), meaning our skin “recognizes” jojoba. It’s easily absorbed, intensely soothing, and moisturizing. I love adding it to foam soap products because it makes them so moisturizing. Sometimes I don’t even need lotion after washing up!

If you’d like to change up these ingredients, feel free to get creative!

Try using avocado oil instead of jojoba for an even richer product, or argan oil for a lighter moisturizing effect. You can leave out the aloe, or add a different water-based ingredient instead (Lavender hydrosol is great!)

The drops of essential oil you add is also up to personal preference. You can use as few as 2 or 3 drops, or as much as 15 drops per 1 oz (30 ml) of product. These are wash-off products,  so the drop count is up to you.

And because these are soap products, I don’t always measure my ingredients accurately. I used to, but now I just estimate!

Recipes

These travel-sized soaps should last from 1–2 weeks of regular use. They’re not made with preservatives, so you should make a fresh bottle after a few weeks anyway.
