I love using body butters! Here's one of my favorite recipes:
Luscious Skin Recipe
Makes about 9 oz (252 gm)
1 oz (28 gm) Beeswax
2 oz (56 gm) Cocoa butter
2 oz (56 gm) Red palm
1 oz (30 ml) Marula
2 oz (60 ml) Baobab
Melt the beeswax and cocoa butter in a double boiler, and add the red palm. (I add the butters and oils to a 16 oz Pyrex measuring cup, and place the cup in a pot with some water in the bottom of the pot.) Once the red palm is melted, take the pot off the heat and add the marula and baobab and stir. Pour into several 1 or 2 oz glass jars right away, cover and allow to cool.
I use this butter every day and my skin loves it!
Here are some descriptions of the butters and oils in this great recipe:
The Baobab Tree (Adansonia digitata) is an African tree with seeds that make a luscious oil with a wonderful aroma. Like avocado oil, baobab oil is highly penetrating, deeply nourishing and softens dry skin. It is known to restore and re-moisturize the epidermis. Baobab is an extremely stable oil, and should be a golden yellow color. It has a shelf life of two years.
- Absorbs easily and quickly
- Improves the skin’s elasticity
- Cell regenerator
- Relieves eczema
- Relieves psoriasis
- Alleviates pain from burns and regenerates epithelial tissue quickly
- Gives the skin tone and elasticity
Beeswax (Cera alba) comes in many different qualities. The wax we use is from Aromatics International, and is organic, unrefined, yellow and aromatic. It comes pre-cut into small pellets, making blending easy. This beeswax comes from a company in New Zealand that uses no chemicals, pesticides or sprays of any kind. Just pure, natural beeswax!
Beeswax can be used as a base for creams, balms, salves and lotions. The more beeswax you add, the thicker your product will be. It also has a lovely aroma for blending! Beeswax has a very stable chemical make-up and its properties remain consistent over time. It is resistant to natural oxidization and is completely insoluble in water. Beeswax has a 20 year shelf life!
Cocoa butter is a beautiful, hard aromatic butter pressed from the roasted seeds of the Cacao tree (Theobroma nucifera) in West Africa. It softens at body temperature and adds a rich, creamy and thick consistency to lotions and creams. Our cocoa butter is high quality, expeller-pressed and unrefined. It is not deodorized and has its own natural chocolate aroma. Cocoa butter is highly protective of the skin, and acts as a water repellent. It contains about 5 IU of vitamin E per ounce. Vitamin E is a potent skin antioxidant and a well-known skin healer and moisturizer.
- Softens and lubricates skin
- Reduces cutaneous dryness
- Improve skin's flexibility
- Cocoa butter is particularly praised for its antioxidant properties
- Used to reduce wrinkles around the eyes and corners of the mouth
- Used extensively as a base for suppositories
Cocoa butter has a one year shelf life, longer if stored cold. Extra virgin cocoa butter, organic and unrefined, will give you the best butter for skin preparations. As soon as it is refined, it loses its wonderful skin healing properties. The butter should have a yellowish tone.
Marula oil (Sclerocarya birrea) is a wonderful carrier with a very light aroma. Can be used on its own for massage or as a great base for essential oils or butter blends. Marula is a very stable oil, and should last two years. No solvents are used in the extraction process. The oil is filtered at the end and warmed to 50 degrees to remove any impurities. This warming does not change the therapeutic properties of the oil.
- Protects and nourishes the skin
- Good for oily skin and hair
- Relieves dermatitis
- Relieves eczema
- Relieves psoriasis
- Helps heal sunburns
- Heals chapped and irritated skin
Red Palm Oil (Elaeis guineensis) is considered the richest natural source of carotenoids, containing about 15 times more than carrots. The human body processes carotenoids as Vitamin A, which enhances eye health. Carotenoids also act as biological antioxidants, protecting cells and tissues from the damaging effects of free radicals. It blends beautifully with palm kernel oil, and has a one year shelf life. Like all butters and carrier oils, red palm oil is best when it is not refined in any way--so it contains all its natural vitamins and antioxidants. Known for its excellent stability, even when heated to high temperatures.
- Skin conditioner and moisturizer
- Soothes eczema and psoriasis
- Encourages new skin cell formation
- Helps to normalize skin tone and texture
