Coriander essential oil is a powerful natural remedy with a history spanning more than 3,000 years.

Esteemed in ancient Sanskrit, Greek, Hebrew, Latin, and Egyptian writings, it was cherished for its medicinal and therapeutic uses. This potent herb was even referred to as the 'secret of happiness,' believed to promote joy and well-being.

Coriander in Ancient Times:

  • In ancient Sanskrit writings, Coriander was highlighted for its healing properties. The Ayurvedic system used it to balance the body's three Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), improve digestion, fight infections, and even as an aphrodisiac.

  • The Ancient Greeks used Coriander in perfumery and as an aromatic spice. Hippocrates, the 'Father of Medicine,' extolled its health benefits, and it was often used in spells intended to bestow immortality and love.

  • In Hebrew tradition, Coriander seeds were likened to manna, the divine food given by God to the Israelites, implying its capacity to bring divine joy and happiness.

  • In Latin and Egyptian cultures, Coriander was believed to amplify feelings of love and desire, leading to its use in love potions and spells. Its seeds were found in Egyptian tombs, such as that of Tutankhamun, indicating their importance in afterlife rituals and disease prevention.

Today, while we might not use Coriander essential oil in the exact ways our ancestors did, we still value it for its therapeutic properties. Here are three modern ways to use Coriander essential oil safely and effectively:

1. Digestive Support: Coriander essential oil is renowned for its capacity to calm an upset stomach and support digestion. The following 'Coconut Coriander Belly Blend' can help ease belly discomfort:

  • 1 oz (28 g) Coconut Oil (Cocos nucifera)

  • 9 drops Coriander essential oil (Coriandrum sativum)

  • 9 drops Sweet Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis)

Combine these in a 1 oz (30 ml) glass jar and massage into your belly and lower back when needed.

2. Pain Relief: Like other spicy essential oils, Coriander is recognized for its natural pain and inflammation-relieving properties. The following 'Coriander Pain Relief Oil' can help soothe sore muscles and aching joints:

  • 1 fl oz (30 ml) Jojoba Wax (Simmondsia chinensis)

  • 11 drops Coriander essential oil (Coriandrum sativum)

  • 7 drops Gingergrass essential oil (Cymbopogon martinii var. sofia)

Blend these ingredients in a 1 oz (30 ml) glass bottle, and apply to sore or painful areas as needed.

3. Stress & Anxiety Relief: Coriander essential oil contains linalool, a natural component also found in Lavender, known for its relaxing effects on the nervous system. The following 'Coriander & Lavender Diffuser Blend' can help soothe anxiety and calm stress:

  • 3 drops Coriander essential oil (Coriandrum sativum)

  • 3 drops Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia)

Add this blend directly to your essential oil diffuser.

Using Coriander essential oil in these ways can help harness its therapeutic properties for physical well-being and its aroma for promoting relaxation and happiness. As you continue to discover new ways to use essential oils safely and effectively, you're honoring the wisdom of our ancestors and continuing the tradition of utilizing this 'secret of happiness.'
